Prepare For Cold Weather

The Cold Fronts are moving in!

Here, in Virginia, it's been unusually warm but the cold fronts are slowly moving in. Now is the time to prepare your skin for the cooler months. Cold weather brings many challenges, especially concerning your skin. To ensure you look radiant for the holiday season you need to get your skincare regimen ready.

Your skin-type will determine the type of moisturizer you should switch to but a good rule of thumb is to make the change to a heavier one. The cold air depletes moisture and hydration from your skin, leaving it dry. Additional water (hydration) and moisture (oil) will keep your skin protected and glowing.

With dryness comes more buildup of surface cells. During the next few months you will want to exfoliate more. Doing so regularly (2-3 times a week versus once a week) will slough off the dead cells, promote cell turnover, and rejuvenate the skin. In addition, exfoliating will allow better absorption of treatment products (serums) and moisturizer. More exfoliation will keep your skin looking its best.

You should already be using an SPF daily, but be sure to continue protecting your skin from the sun - even on cloudy days. The suns ray still penetrate through the clouds and can cause damage to your skin. Using and SPF will protect and prevent your skin from premature aging and hyperpigmentation.

YOUR PERFECT WINTER ROUTINE SHOULD LOOK SOMETHING LIKE THE FOLLOWING:

Cleanse

A high quality cleanser for your specific skin type or condition should be used twice daily to remove dirt and impurities.

Tone

A hydrating toner will balance your skin's pH after cleansing and act as a vehicle to drive treatment products and moisturizer deeper into the skin.

treat

Use a treatment product such as a serum or spot treatment to target your problem areas.

moisturize

As mentioned above, a heavier moisturizer will keep your skin protected during the winter months.

exfoliate

2-3 times a week, use an exfoliating product to smooth and refine the skin, and prevent a buildup of excess dead cells.
